In Taiwan(Formosa), we got to have Sa̍hnūiⁿ— boiled egg, chiú-mīsòaⁿ( mīsòaⁿ — vermicelli cooked with bíchiú — rice wine), which later turn into cake or with cake (btw, when I was a kid, the ice cream cake was trending) and so on feast, there are dishes, back in the time was mainly focus on the specialty of the meat savory, Ló͘ bah(Taiwanese braised pork), Pe̍hchhiatke(Sliced boiled chicken), besides Tâioân liāulí — Taiwanese cuisine, nowadays you can have all kinds of option, go to a restaurant to have a pāntoh(banquet) in all kinds of dishes around the world or to have it at your home and so on, a family gathering, friends gathering, or any kind of the birthday once want to have, oh yeh, in school, students may play prank, throw someone into the school pond and so on, with the shaving foam, flour(yeh not encouraging, don’t waste food), it’s really cultural stuff.
And yes, the birthday song, it’s common to sing multiple languages on birthday songs in Taiwan, depending on the family member (Tâigí, English, Hakfa, Mandarin, Japanese…), they are even some pop songs made for the topic of birthday!(*Details of the Taiwan languages)
Though I think the birthday celebrations are going to simplify more and more as your age and mental grow along the journey of our life.
